All I want for Christmas...

Festive Season at Truman

On Thursday 8th December, we'll be playing host to an array of live music, delicious street food and festive cheer as local mental health charity, City and Hackney Mind bring the neighbourhood together to raise money for the elderly this Christmas season.

Join us at the Old Truman Brewery Forecourt at 91 Brick Lane from 5.30pm and get into the Christmas spirit with a glass of mulled wine and a few carols, or listen in on brass quintet Quintetta's performance amongst Christmas trees from Pines and Needles and plants from Grace and Thorn.

Then follow us round to Dray Walk and Ely’s Yard from 6.30pm for a tasty treat, more mulled wine and music from the Hackney Voices Community Choir. There you will find late night shopping events and a mini Christmas Market featuring some of the best of Sunday UpMarket, the Backyard Market and The London Artisan. Our Ely’s Yard street food traders will also be there to feed you. There is the further opportunity to get stuck into a raffle and silent auction with a selection of fantastically festive prizes, with all proceeds going to City and Hackney Mind.

Working in East London since 1980, Mind has made its number one priority to ensure that anyone experiencing mental health distress receives the support they need. The charity aims to promote well-being, resilience and recovery in the City and Hackney boroughs. Sadly, Christmas is a time when mental health sufferers can feel most alone, so this year Mind are raising money for those who fall victim to being lonely during the holidays. Elderly people within the community as well as those suffering with dementia or Alzheimer’s can be most affected and Mind wants to make sure that no one is isolated, abandoned or outcast.

Usually found tucked away in a cosy corner of our Rinse Showrooms, Woolosophy will also be bringing their stylish hats and snoods to our Christmas Market on Thursday. As well as offering perfect ready-made gifts to buy, there's also the option to go the extra mile and give something handmade this Christmas. Pick up a designer Knit Kit containing their own brand of sustainable merino wool, attractive instructions and beautiful bamboo knitting needles. If you don't like getting hands on, you can always encourage a loved-one to take up a new craft, sit back and relax next to the tree and make this year's Christmas present themselves!

There will also be cheeky pop-art inspired prints and cards from Ryan Hodge, artisan plant-based candles from McKinley and Paget, industrial and vintage lights by William and Watson and handmade grooming products by Norse.

There's no better way than Christmas shopping and belting carols to work up a large appetite, but if you are unable to catch them at our Christmas Market, Mr Sausage are firm favourites of the public most weekends at the Truman Brewery. Their hearty, smoked pork sausages use nothing but the best meat and come served in a fresh baguette with a tantalizing choice of toppings. From grilled or crispy fried onion to lashings of mustard, mayo and a variety of spicy sauces, you won't be disappointed with the condiments on offer to create the perfect sandwich for you.

For those with a sweet-tooth or with particular dietary requirements we've also got you covered. Evolving with the seasons and influenced by festivities and flavours from around the world, get excited to indulge in cakes and bakes from Just Another Slice, all washed down with some warming mulled wine or spiced apple cider.

Number Six

8th December | Dray Walk

G-Shock

8th December | Dray Walk

Since its inception, Number Six has strived to be a hub for small brands with big ideas, reminiscent of the very spirit of the store. Striving to share their love for each product, Number Six has become a place where customer service, dedication to brand identity and individual culture has been at the forefront of their focus since they launched their physical shop.

When opening the shop the right location was key and there was only one place that seemed to fit the brand’s mindset and vision: the gritty and undeniably charming streets of East London. Mixed in with a melting pot of culture and street style, this fashion hub stands out from the crowds.

Now that the weather is getting colder and the days shorter Number Six are stocked floor to ceiling with clothing and accessories for Autumn/Winter 16. They've got Barbour jackets, Portuguese Flannel shirts and Champion jumpers, as well as many other little gifts for the urban man.

Casio engineer Kikuo Ibe launched G-SHOCK in 1983, with the aim of creating a watch that wasn’t just a fragile piece of jewellery but instead one that was high-functioning, unbreakable, and based upon a triple 10 philosophy. The original watches set out to be water resistant to 10 bar, have a minimum 10 year battery life and can survive a 10 metre drop. After a long road of prototypes, Ibe created G-SHOCK DW-5600, which is still found in store today.

Not only does G-SHOCK transcend the limits of a conventional watch but their shop on Dray Walk transcends the limits of a conventional retail space too. The space has become a hub for creative underground talent in music and fashion, hosting performances and installations from emerging artists and designers.Every Thursday night they host DJs and invite Grime artists to fill the store with their tunes.

Bringing together crowds old and young, G-SHOCK’s “never give up” attitude is visible in everything they do.

Son of A Stag

Japanese & American
denim & workwear inspired brands

Grace & Thorn are staying open extra late on the 8th of December to help us celebrate Christmas, so we thought we’d give you the chance to get to know them a little better. It is their intention to help people in the city live greener lives, with their hashtag #greenupyourgaff inspirng everyone to fill their homes with beautiful plants, however concrete, small or borrowed each space might be.

As nontraditional florist, each bouquet reflects on the movement and evolution of design, playing with colours and textures to create something asymmetrical and unique.

The Grace & Thorn shop at 91 Brick Lane will be hosting amazing watercolour workshops on Wednesdays throughout December run by artist “Bloody Bishop”. You’ll have the chance to learn the art of watercolour as you develop painitngs of Grace & Thorn’s plants, ending the evening with your own little masterpiece...and maybe a new plant to match!

Becoming one of the key landmarks for denim in the East End, Son of a Stag carries the largest choice of Japanese and American denim jeans in Europe. With a focus on quality, their goal is to deliver the very best clothing, denim jeans and footwear from all around the globe.

Walking into the shop on Dray Walk you’ll be transported to a world of denim and every shelf will catch your eye. They even offer on the spot hemming alterations with an original Union Special 43200G stitching machine with each item purchased. These machines are super rare and were the original chain stitch machine for Levi's.

Folk, Oliver Spencer,
YMC & New Balance

2nd - 4th December | Ely's Yard

Pioneering the American outerwear industry Penfield used innovative techniques to create their first collection in 1975. Starting with four key outerwear styles all made from rip-stop Nylon fabric, insulated with down and quilted, each garment was expertly designed to withstand the diversity of the New England climate.

Since the 1980's Penfield has witnessed high-profile collaborations and innovative fabric developments. Combined with an unfaltering commitment to quality, practicality, durability, function and style, the brand has caught the attention of consumers across the globe.

This month they're coming to Truman to get us kitted out for winter. Designed by people who know and love the outdoors, each item is ensured to shelter you from the storm anywhere the wind blows or rain falls! Building something that will last, their ethos creating something "for life in the open". Penfield's attention grabbing discounts make this an event not to be missed.

This weekend we’re treating ourselves to a little something from Folk, Oliver Spencer, New Balance and YMC. As they take over G4, here’s a little insight about the brands.

Since 2002 Folk have navigated the path between streetwear and the architect-designer aesthetic, paying attention to detail is their strong suit. As a brand they look to embody style without drama. Looking at areas beyond clothing, Folk is now a multi-discipline design studio with furniture, objects & artwork.

YMC’s whole philosophy is inspired by industrial designer Raymond Loewy’s stance on the future of design, “You must create your own style.”  This is the driving force behind the brand’s identity pushing them to bring fresh inspiration to menswear and add a subtle dose of femininity to their typically androgynous womenswear. Creating modern, functional clothing which avoids fixed trends in favour of understated, wearable style is what YMC is all about.
